George E. Haggerty Prize in LGBTQ+ Studies in Eighteenth-Century Scholarship

Article Prize Deadline: Jan. 1, 2025

The George E. Haggerty Book Prize will be awarded in 2026.

George E. Haggerty (1949-2023) was a groundbreaking scholar of queer eighteenth-century studies whose brilliant books and essays, generous mentorship of younger scholars, and dedication to ASECS fostered the vibrant LGBTQ+ scholarship that thrives in our field today. The Haggerty Prize will be given annually to recognize both published articles (in odd-numbered years) and published books (in even-numbered years) on an alternating schedule. The prize carries an award of $500.

Guidelines:

  • The article must have been published in a journal or any peer-reviewed publication with a print date between Jan. 1, 2022 and Dec. 31, 2024.
  • The article may be nominated by a member of the society, by its author, or by an editor of the publishing journal. Self-nominations are limited to one article per year.
  • Normally, submissions for the Haggerty prize are in English. Works written in languages other than English are permitted, but it may not be possible for the prize committee to assess these works. Please contact the Executive Director for further information.
  • The author must be a member of the ASECS at the time of submission for consideration. Membership information, including renewals, can be found here.
  • Should uploading the article to this form be an obstacle to applying, please contact Executive Director Benita Blessing (director@asecs.org) for an alternate method.
  • Submissions due Jan. 1, 2025.
