ASECS Travel Grants

The grants listed below support research in eighteenth-century studies that requires travel. Only members of ASECS in good standing are eligible to apply.

Applicants should submit only one application and will be considered for every grant for which they are eligible. All application materials and letters of recommendation must be received by the EXTENDED DEADLINE: April 15, 2024.

All completed applications must include:

  • Application via Google Form
  • The names and contact information of two references familiar with the work
  • For the Huntington Fellowship, please send 2 letters of recommendation to the ASECS Executive Director (director@asecs.org) with the subject line “Huntington Recommendation [Last Name of Applicant].”
  • Combine the following supporting documents into a single PDF file and upload them through the application form.
    1. Curriculum vitae
    2. Narrative description of the project (maximum 750 words):
      • its contribution to the field,
      • how much you will have completed by the time of the proposed fellowship,
      • your plan for using the time of the fellowship
      • relevant bibliographical information
    3. A budget   

No applicant may accept more than one ASECS travel grant or fellowship in any given academic year.

Winners of ASECS Travel Awards and Fellowships are required to mention the award in the notes or acknowledgements section of any publication supported by the award.

Gwin J. and Ruth Kolb Research Travel Fellowship – $500

Eligibility: All members of ASECS who are faculty or independent scholars within the first five years of receipt of their Ph.D. Advanced doctoral candidates with a demonstrable need for specific collections necessary for their dissertation also are encouraged to apply.

Purpose:  To supplement costs for younger eighteenth-century scholars to travel to distant collections in North America and abroad.

Winners of ASECS Travel Awards and Fellowships are required to mention the award in the notes or acknowledgements section of any publication supported by the award.

Robert R. Palmer Research Travel Fellowship – $500 

Eligibility: All members of ASECS.
Purpose:  To support documentary research related primarily to the history and culture of France.

Winners of ASECS Travel Awards and Fellowships are required to mention the award in the notes or acknowledgements section of any publication supported by the award.

Aubrey L. Williams Research Travel Fellowship – $1500

Eligibility: ASECS members resident in North America.

Purpose: To support documentary research in eighteenth-century English literature, by scholars based in North America.
Restrictions: The fellowship is restricted to doctoral students at work on a dissertation in the field of eighteenth-century English literature.

Winners of ASECS Travel Awards and Fellowships are required to mention the award in the notes or acknowledgements section of any publication supported by the award.

Richard H. Popkin Research Travel Fellowship – $250

Eligibility: All members of ASECS
Purpose: To supplement costs for scholars to travel to collections in North America and abroad.

Winners of ASECS Travel Awards and Fellowships are required to mention the award in the notes or acknowledgements section of any publication supported by the award.

Theodore E.D. Braun Research Travel Fellowship – $1500

Eligibility:  All members of ASECS
Purpose:  To support researchers, regardless of rank, who are working in French literary studies.

Winners of ASECS Travel Awards and Fellowships are required to mention the award in the notes or acknowledgements section of any publication supported by the award.

Paula Backscheider Archival Fellowship – $1000

Eligibility: All members of ASECS
Purpose: To support those researchers whose projects necessitate work in archives, repositories, and special collections (public and private) in foreign countries and/or in the United States.

ASECS Huntington Library Short-term Fellowship
The Travel Awards Committee also evaluates applications fro the ASECS Huntington Library Short-Term Fellowship (https://www.huntington.org/collaborative-fellowships). This fellowship is for postdoctoral scholars or PhD candidates who reside outside the Los Angeles metro area and wish to use The Huntington’s collections to study the period 1660–1815. The award carries a stipend of $3,500. Applicants must be members of the ASECS at the time of the award. Please note that this award follows a different procedure than the Huntington’s many other Short-Term Fellowships, which may be of interest to ASECS members, but for which you must apply directly to the Huntington.
